Kalin and Jennifer of Westlake High School design and construct a furniture set made from salvaged cardboard boxes, hot glue, and duct tape! The entry is inspired by the 'paper table' project and the 'cardboard furniture' episode. We chose this project to 'build big' because we both are very involved in art and felt like we could have more artistic liberty with this project. The original project asks to make one table using newspaper and masking tape, so we made a whole furniture set using cardboard and duct tape! Along with constructing it, we designed the pieces ourselves. The set features a modern coffee table, sofa, and decorative sculpture. We were able to get the cardboard from grocery shipping boxes, so all cardboard used is 100% recycled! This is also why we chose to represent a tree in the decorative sculpture: to symbolize the reuse and the new life of the paper material. In addition, we practiced our math and physics to make measurements and to make sure the table and sofa could support anything! This is an entry for the Design Squad Build Big Contest 2011.
