This is our plot summary for Chapter 17 of To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. A member of the press asks the Judge about what has happened in the trial so far. He says, "In Chapter 17, Mr. Tate testifies that Mr. Ewell called him and said that his daughter, Mayella, had been raped. When Mr. Tate arrives he sees bruises all over her, and learns that the rapist is supposedly Tom Robinson. Atticus is quick to question Mr. Tate as to if a doctor was called for Mayella. Mr.Tate answers that one was not necessary, though the fact that something had happened was obvious. Mr. Tate confirms that Mayella had a black eye on the right side of her face and had finger marks suggesting that she had been choked all around her neck. After this, Mr. Ewell is called to testify. He says that screaming made him come in from the woods, and he arrived at his house to see his daughter being raped by a Negro. He also states that furniture had been strewn about as though there had been a struggle in the room. This time Atticus asks Mr.Ewell if a doctor had been called, and Mr. Ewell replies in the negative. Mr.Ewell also agrees that he had seen Mayella with a black right eye. Atticus then asks him to right his name on a piece of paper, and the court notices that he is left handed. The chapter ends with Scout pondering that a left handed person would have been most likely to make a bruise on the right side of Mayella`s face."
