Oct 28, 2010 - Hey Peter.. while the point at the end negates some of the dizzying array of tools that you mention, your list of sites and tools includes some really amazing services. I took the time to pull links to all of them for people that are interested in checking them out. You can find them at newsouthinteractive(dot)com in the primary technology blog (YouTube won't let me post a link):

Oct 28, 2010 - All of those sites combined are about 50% as effective as going and hitting the pavement. Sure, many people will stumble upon your music online, but just watching this video makes the head spin, nobody actually keeps up with these sites. Much of the energy is better put into making contacts and getting the act in somewhere useful.

Oct 28, 2010 - Bravo, well said! Although the sites you mentioned are all powerful tools to help band's gain exposure, sell merch, book gigs, etc., there is still no substitute for reaching out to fans the old fashioned way, by performing right in front of them and meeting them in person......it's the ultimate test of a band's merit! Oct 29, 2010 - Beauty.... You missed the most important ingredient though my friend. PAYOLA... all these ancillary mechanisms are fine, but in general. they add up to bupkis.....the old fashioned way? Big Airplay...if you are going to go Big, you have to have big airpay, as bullshit as radio is, it is the Only way.....arcade fire et el are still flukie.... .PAYOLA, tired and true, you still need a strong indie to make arrangements...and yes, that could be me...... good luck..

Oct 29, 2010 - This is tough to follow until about 4:23. Direct Human Interaction? Whodathunkit?

Oct 30, 2010 - I am an armchair songwriter and I am amazed at how thoroughly this man has researched the online tools and websites for promoting and facilitating professional music acts. I too am amazed at how fast he can talk, BUT, if you notice the jump cuts, he has edited his exposition. It would be very hard to get all these words honked out so fast without mistakes without editing. This man kind of resembles Ringo Starr, with the hair cut and glasses. Anyhow, bravo on your research and information.

Nov 30, 2010 - I'm sure a few of these digital tools have some merit like Indaba Music and a few others. But I think the point is that there is a whole industry that deals not in music but in exploiting the dreams and aspirations of musicians by offering services that are virtually (pun intended) worthless to all but the techno business geeks who started them.

Jan 6, 2011 - The unpopular reality is this -- All of the Above. It's not a choice between "digital tools" and "direct human interaction" at all. To be successful in the Music Business (not necessarily as a "musician"), you truly need to master songwriting, instrumental chops and live performance in addition to the ridiculously numerous digital tools. Why? Well, the labels won't help you. It's DIY or fail.
