Dogs chew, often just for the share joy of chewing but certainly puppies chew because they are teething and they are exploring and learning about their world with their mouths. But dogs, adults' dogs chew to for a variety of reasons, again for the share joy of chewing but also to relieve boredom, even anxiety and stress. Your goal if your dog is chewing on your furniture, isn't to teach them not to chew, it's to teach them what to chew on. If you condition your dog to have a really good chew toy habit they will know what they are allowed to chew on and what they are not. In order to ensure that your dog doesn't chew on your furniture, chews on other illegal items. Is that you need to supervise your dog from puppy hood to ensure that they don't get that habit. Instead that you engrain in them to chew on toys. If they already got that habit you going to need to break them of it, simply by not allowing it to happen for a long period of time while you get them focus on their chew toys. Usually the best chew toys are something that is either edible in part or in hold. So a rubber bone that you can put yummy treat or something pasty in for your dog to lick and chew or something they can eat in its entirety, like a dried meat bone of some sort that they can while away their time at. Chew toys provide your dog with a dog appropriate activity to engage in and the bonus to them is they don't involve you. So it's the perfect thing to your dog when you can't focus and play with them, such as you need to work on your computer or you want to settle down and watch a movie. You're going to give your dog their version of a computer game or movie and for your dog it's a chew toy.
